I always felt that in order for me to call myself a feminist, I had to be visibly protesting, actively writing letters, or chaining myself to something. I only recently realized that there are so many ways I have always been a feminist without knowing it. My art allows me to say what I find difficult to articulate into words or actions. It grounds me and makes me feel powerful, especially when I share it with others. I have realized that you can, indeed, make waves and keep calm at the same time.
Mermaids have always appeared in my art—not just when I began painting, but from the very beginning of my creative journey with fabric art way back in the day. From the start, they’ve been a central image for me: magical, powerful, and unapologetically bold. Mermaids can travel the world without limits, and they make no apologies for their bodies or their presence.
