Women don’t really have a choice. Outside forces have control over our bodies and what we are permitted to do with them. From what we wear on them, to how we act in them, to what we physically do with them. I am privileged to live in a country that “allows” me the choice to end a pregnancy. But the fact that it is a law implies that my choice is questioned and not really my own after all.
Mermaids have always appeared in my art—not just when I began painting, but from the very beginning of my creative journey with fabric art way back in the day. From the start, they’ve been a central image for me: magical, powerful, and unapologetically bold. Mermaids can travel the world without limits, and they make no apologies for their bodies or their presence.
